Art is a lie that makes us realise the truth
Presented by: The Method Actors

Concept

Classical music will interlink with monologues from playwrights like Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov, and Miller. These two performing art forms will work together to create one cohesive exploration into the story of artistic creation, the nature of performance and pretence, and the use of art in deciphering the highs and lows of the human experience. Six actors will perform various monologues, and one dialogue. These separate pieces will be linked together by classical music interludes, with some musical improvisation as and when necessary.

Press Release:

Arte. The Italian term for collective artistic creation. Combining timeless classical music with monologues from some of the world’s most famous and influential playwrights, such as William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, and Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, this production will take audiences on an emotive journey through art and the human condition. With a talented ensemble cast of young actor-alumni from the Method Actors (MATC) and classical pianist, Willem de Beer, this production promises to be both lively and thought-provoking. Arte is a celebration and tribute to some of the greatest dramatists and composers who have challenged and inspired generations. It also reminds us of man’s ability to transcend a largely tragic existence through the creation and beauty of art. Join MATC and Stephanie van Niekerk, in conjunction with Brooklyn Theatre and DALRO, for this exclusive GauFestival show: Saturday, 30 September 2017, 13:00, Brooklyn Theatre.

Blurb: Combining music and monologues, the Method Actors, in association with Brooklyn Theatre and DALRO, presents a challenging, tragic, and ultimately triumphant exploration of art and the human condition.  Promotional Poster Information

Performer Information:

Stephanie van Niekerk has been the director and owner of The Method Actors’ Training Centre (MATC) since 1991. Having been in the industry since the age of 8, Stephanie has worked as an actress, as well as in various ‘behind-the-scenes’ roles in South Africa, Toronto, and New York. She holds a B.A. degree in Drama from the University of Pretoria and studied Method Acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York. She has also gifted others with her talent for educating, and her passion for the art of acting, by teaching in Toronto, and at the University of Pretoria, before opening MATC. As a prolific artistic and technical director, producer, and writer, Stephanie offers her students unique and valuable actor training. As with her other shows, Arte is a culmination of her hard work, and a representation of what her training and expertise has given to her students

Peraldo Senekal discovered his love for directing in his 3rd year at MATC, where he directed workshop scenes. He returned to MATC as a mentor and director after his graduation. In 2015, Peraldo was assistant director on an original MATC stage production, Daydreams & Nightmares, before directing Real?, which ran at both the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, and the Krêkvars-Kopanong Festival in 2016. Arte is a continuation of his foray into directing. Peraldo is also no stranger to being in the spotlight, having performed in theatre productions like Mirakel, Die Regte Speurder Bloedhond, and Lot. He has also acted on 7de Laan, and been featured in independent short and feature films like Reload, and the multiple award winning Operasie E.N.G.E.L.

Kay Dewes is an actress, singer, scriptwriter, and producer. She completed 4 years of actor training at MATC, and holds an Honours degree in English. Kay has performed on-stage and in front of the camera in productions like Everyman; Daydreams & Nightmares; Real?; Songbook, with Judy Page; and Discovery Vitality commercials. She has also worked behind the scenes on various short films and stage productions, including Die Regte Speurder Bloedhond, Don’t Mention the Dream, Lot, Operasie E.N.G.E.L., and A Night to Remember. Her love for performance, the English language, and the arts in general led her to compile and produce Arte. Kay is also currently working on other projects and looks forward to what these future endeavours hold.

Nuchka Oostendurp is an actress and drama coach who completed 4 years of actor training at MATC. She has taken part in various stage productions, including Don’t Mention the Dream, and Everyman, and was assistant director for MATC’s production of Lot. She has also appeared in commercials for Jägermeister and SABC 3. Her latest television work was on the series, Soap on a Rope. Nuchka also regularly assists with teaching and directing at MATC and enjoys sharing her talent, knowledge, and skills with the future performers who train at the school.

Since childhood, Janri Barker has loved performing. She gained a Masters degree in Architecture, but her love for the theatre could not be quenched. After completing 5 years of actor training at MATC, she has been a part of several theatre shows and short films, including The Zoo Story, Mirakel, Screwtape Proposes a Toast and Bomskok. Apart from being a versatile actress, Janri is also a director, set designer and producer; writing, producing, and acting alongside her husband, Stephan, in such shows at Uittrek, Intrek en Trou, which had runs at both the Joburg Theatre and Innibos Festival in 2013. Currently, she is working on an Afrikaans comedy, Die Opsit, which will be performed in September.

Stephan Barker studied at MATC from 2006-2009, and has been working in the acting industry for the past 7 years. He has appeared in 7de Laan and Binnelanders, and has also featured in independent short and feature films, such as Safe Bet, the multiple award winning Operasie E.N.G.E.L., and Nowhere. Stephan has a multi-faceted love for theatre; co-writing, producing, and acting in Uittrek, Intrek en Trou, with his wife, Janri; and appearing in other stage productions like Die Waterwyser en die Proponentjie, and monologues from Richard III. Stephan also believes in continually improving his skillset by taking part in workshops and short courses. Currently, he is working on the Afrikaans comedy, Die Opsit, which will be performed in September.

Pieter-Dirk Uys in
THE ECHO OF A NOISE
a one-man memoir

Thursday 05 October 19:00

“”” ”I tell the story behind the stories. Turning 70 has given me the thumbs-up to share the secrets and let the cat out of the bag.”   Pieter-Dirk Uys

FIVE STARS ***** “Brilliant.  A soul-bearing show that has universal resonance.” Cape Argus

“A formidable raconteur.  What a profound journey it turns out to be.” Cape Times

“’n meesterlike storieverteller, sonder arrogansie of selfbeheptheid.”  Litnet

“Truly inspirational.”  Theatre Scene Cape Town

Having performed alone on the stages of the world well over seven thousand times, Pieter-Dirk Uys has learnt that every show is the first and the last performance – because each audience demands and gets a different energy, topicality and excitement.

Now in his 70th year, Pieter-Dirk doesn’t glance back at the successes and failures that have strengthened his belief in a constant improvement of his work, but at those small signposts that throughout his life subconsciously pointed him in a right and original direction. His father Hannes Uys and his mother Helga Bassel.  His grandmothers, his teachers, his passions.  Sophia Loren, censorship, false eyelashes and making a noise when everyone demanded silence.

“This is just Pieter-Dirk Uys speaking and he opens his heart and talks about his private and public life. He leads you into his inner sanctuary, takes you through our history and shows us where what is public and private meet. Uys was and still is a voice in the wilderness. He remains a master storyteller who can make as much fun of himself as he does with the others who get a lashing from his sharp tongue. The packed auditorium rose as one with a ‘Bravo Pieter!’ and the standing ovation was thunderous. An artist who can still cause a major traffic jam outside the theatre!”
